Special weather statement calls for up to 50 mm of rain in parts of Calgary

You know it’s been a gloomy season when your local weather man is saying sorry.
“I wish I could apologize to all the people of Calgary. This has not been the best summer,” said Environment Canada Meteorologist Erik de Groot.
The agency issued a special weather statement for up to 50 mm rain to fall in some areas by Sunday. According to de Groot, a slow-moving system off the west coast is spiraling this way, but it’s still making conditions a bit unpredictable.
“It could be that some places will get quite a bit, other places may see a lot less. It could be up to a little further west than we thought, a little bit further north than we thought, so that’s the reason for the special weather statement. Our best guess right now is probably 10 – 20 mm for Calgary by (Sunday) morning,” de Groot said.
He adds most of the rain will fall Saturday night, and it should weaken by early Sunday.
“Unfortunately, this system over Vancouver Island that I was talking about doesn’t really go anywhere. So it looks like Sunday night, we could see something similar happening,” he said.
While the storm will linger in the region, Environment Canada says by Sunday, it will largely impact areas south of Calgary, such as Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.
