Emails link Enron to “last minute” power contract changes

More light is being shed on an ‘out clause’ contained in power provider agreements in Alberta.
Some emails associated with the contract which dates back to 2000 have been leaked.
At the heart of a lawsuit launched by the province was the insertion of the words “more unprofitable” on the power purchase agreements the Alberta government announced as it exited a regulated market.
Emails provided news outlets suggest it was added at the last minute, engineered by now defunct Enron.
Power providers are using the clause to walk away from contracts; a move that could cost taxpayers $2-billion.
The Notley Government argues the change was done without public consultation making it illegal.
The matter is scheduled to head to court in November.
