Canadian athletes begin returning home from Rio

It’s being hailed as one of the most successful games for Canada, and now our athletes will likely get a hero’s welcome when they return to Toronto.

Canada’s Olympic team is on its way back home, and athletes will be returning to the Toronto Pearson International Airport over a two-day period.

The athletes, including Calgary’s own gold medalist Erica Wiebe, will begin returning from Sao Paolo at around 5 a.m. EST. Those who couldn’t get flights out Monday night will return home Wednesday.

Canada’s major airline says it was a large logistical undertaking to get athletes from point A to B.

In total, approximately 690 athletes, coaches and support staff were taken to Brazil.

No word yet on what is being planned for Wiebe and other Calgary-based athletes who will end their return at the Calgary International Airport.
