Decision coming soon on Wild Rapids equipment in Sylvan Lake

Interest continues to build for those people looking to acquire a more permanent reminder of a central Alberta landmark.

“September 10th a decision will be made, one way or another, as to how the slide is going to be dismantled,” said Charlie Everest, General Manager of Wild Rapids water park.

Earlier this summer, the owners decided this would be the last summer for the iconic tourist spot that has drawn visitors from across the province.

Everest says their Kijiji add has gotten more than 100,000 hits with interest coming as far away as India.

“We have a couple serious inquiries of people wanting to put them in an indoor warehouse in Calgary, whether or not, there is a couple other serious inquiries from surrounding towns in terms of putting it in a river valley,” he said.

Officials have also gotten offers for pieces or sections of the slide for personal mementos, to use in a hotel, one man even wanted the half-pipe so he could build something on his property for BMX users.

After working for the park for 13 years, the long-time General Manager says he’s a bit taken aback by the response.

“We’ve been researching salvage companies and pricing out how much it’s going to take to rip it down and we weren’t expecting this,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to see where it goes because I think a lot of it might be living on in Alberta, if that happens maybe I’ll be able to visit it and it’ll be like the good old days.”

Anyone hoping to check out the water park time is running out.

Everest says their last day this year will be the Monday of the long weekend but that is weather permitting.
