Some councillors would like to let sleeping dogs lie or at least continue to drink their fluoride-free water.
Three members have filed a motion to look at adding the enamel building mineral back into Calgary’s tap water, after it was voted out back in 2011.
Others, including Andre Chabot want nothing to do with it.
“We’re talking about putting in a medication, where you can’t actually refuse the medication for necessity of life, so, if somebody says I don’t want to be medicated, they have no option,” he said to CityNews.
The motion, which should come before council Tuesday or Wednesday, quotes a University of Calgary study which shows tooth decay in Calgary kids has been rising at faster rates than in Edmonton, which still has fluoride in the water.
However, Chabot says Edmonton dentists continue to deal with a higher number of patient cavities than in Calgary, even if decay rates have gone up a bit in Cowtown.
