EDMONTON – An Alberta judge has found Travis Vader guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of Lyle and Marie McCann, two seniors who disappeared more than six years ago. Justice Denny Thomas told court the two were killed during a robbery.
Here is some of what was said about the conviction:
“From the evidence I have accepted … I conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Vader committed murder. The killing of the McCanns was not a first-degree murder. It is therefore a second-degree murder.” — Thomas
“Mr. Vader is a drug dealer and addicted to methamphetamine. On July 3, 2010, Mr. Vader had no money, no food and was in desperate circumstances.” — Thomas
“The McCanns and their property were likely nothing more than a target of opportunity — an opportunity that Mr. Vader took.” — Thomas
“Violence occurred in the interaction between the McCanns and Mr. Vader. There was bloodshed. A gun was discharged … The McCanns were victims of violence. Mr. Vader inflicted that violence. The McCanns suffered bodily harm. The presence of their blood makes that obvious.” — Thomas
“I think it’s fair to say that we’re disappointed with the decision … I am surprised by it. Knowing all of the evidence, I am surprised by it.” — Vader defence lawyer Brian Beresh
“There will be an appeal based upon what we think are errors in the judgement.” — Beresh
“Today’s verdict is a huge relief to our family. This has truly been a marathon … We’re thrilled that justice has been served.” — Bret McCann, son of victims Lyle and Marie.
“We don’t know exactly what happened on that afternoon … and probably never will. The convicted person will need to talk and we’re not optimistic that will happen. My parents had a very long and happy life together. They were kindred spirits.” — Bret McCann
“I’m sorry mum and dad, I can do no more. I hope that some day, some how you will be found. I take joy in the legacy you have left behind … Our memory of you will last forever.” — Bret McCann
