Westside Recreation responds to camera use in men’s washroom

A fitness facility on the city’s west side is defending the decision it made to install surveillance cameras in the men’s washroom.

Westside Recreation put the cameras in back in 2013 after getting complaints of people breaking into lockers, cars getting stolen and breaking into homes.

In an internal letter to staff, provided to 660 NEWS that’s now circulating online, its managing director Norm-Jean Hogg urges staff who have concerns to address them to management.

She said there are numerous signs up to warn men they may be taped or recorded.

“Thefts happens in rashes,” she explained. “If someone comes in and has their locker broken into, then we’ll get an incident report and the manager will put those cameras on.”

She adds the video is only viewed within the presence of police and that they are in compliance with the Alberta Privacy Act. They have privacy stalls for those who don’t want to be taped.
