SAIT is marking 100 years of education in Calgary on Sunday and it’s celebrating in a big way.
The school is hosting a birthday party at its main campus, a free event which includes a barbeque, fireworks and a car, truck and helicopter show.
Spokesperson Chris Gerritsen says the school will cut a cake big enough to feed around 2,000 guests.
“It’s massive, it’s seven feet tall, it’s many hundreds of pounds. It took 70 people to create — from SAIT culinary students and instructors and members of the culinary community — about 1200 hours to create,” he says.
SAIT opened in 1916 with 11 students and two pieces of donated machinery, a motorcycle and vehicle, at a time when mostly horses walked Calgary roads. The applied education institute now welcomes about 50,000 students each year.
The event runs from noon until 7:30 p.m.
