New facilities to boost tourism in Calgary

Low gas prices and a weak Canadian dollar will be a boon for the country’s tourism industry in 2017.

The latest outlook from the Conference Board of Canada says overnight visits in Canada will increase by 3 per cent both this year and next, with Calgary and Edmonton also seeing a boost.

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth had a rough 2016, with attendance at a 22-year low, but 2017 should see an increase in so-called pleasure travel.

The Board says the recently opened National Music Centre and Calgary Film Centre should bump up overnight visits by 2.5 per cent.

Edmonton will also see a 2 point bump, due to strong growth from the U.S. and overseas markets.

But there is some bad news for domestic travellers. Travel prices are expected to ramp up too.

Jetsetters can expect to spend more for food and beverage services when they head abroad.
