Fate of Highland Park golf course on the table at city hall

Calgary’s city council will vote Tuesday on the future of the former Highland Park golf course.

Debate on its fate took up much of the discussion at city hall Monday night.

In July, council put off making a decision about the land at 4 Street and McKnight Blvd N.W. and the plan to re-develop it into a subdivision.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says they’ve been hearing a lot of input from residents concerned about a loss of green space, but it’s been a very respectful conversation.

“This has not been a, you know, awful open houses, throw tomatoes, NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) kind of experience. Everyone is genuinely trying to figure out what the right answer is here,” he said.

“I have some real questions myself around the water, around why we’re moving forward on this before the water study is completed, around whether or not daylighting the creek is a real option, as well as around the green space.”

Nenshi says it was the right decision to defer the debate until now.
