Alberta’s NDP prepares to head to Banff for cabinet retreat

Once the federal cabinet retreat wraps up Tuesday, Alberta’s provincial cabinet will meet in Banff.

The three day event starts Wednesday and runs until Friday.

Donald Trump and U.S. policy will likely be the focus again, and Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams says that includes responding to U.S. protectionism which could further damage our economy.

“Reminding or making connections to those in the States that might have an influence on the decisions that are made,” she said.

It also means co-ordinating with other premiers and the prime minister.

“The Alberta government is going to be looking of course at what the timelines might be on Keystone XL – what might be involved in terms of what’s been discussed in terms of export taxes and so forth,” Williams said.

She believes the strategy will be to show U.S. partners the longstanding, mutually beneficial relationship and the dangers of eroding it.
