Calgary parking machine upgrades to include tap and go payment, solar power

Over 500 Calgary ParkPlus machines will be receiving upgrades over the next three months, including a tap and go payment option for credit cards.

Calgary Parking Authority G.M. Mike Derbyshire said with current machines having been around since 2007, it’s time to improve.

“Now those machines are over 10 years old and so it’s come time to replace them,” he said.

After inputting the zone and license plate numbers, drivers will be able to tap their credit card for payment and the new machines will be solar-powered and have bigger screens.

The total cost for the upgrades is $4.5 million, which will come out of the CPA capital reserve.

“It’s not costing Calgarians anything from a tax perspective,” he explained. “we’ve been saving up for these for several years.”
