Calgary’s 420 Clinic has doubts about federal timeline for legalizing weed

A Calgary medical marijuana clinic hopes to expand into the dispensary business once weed becomes legal in the country, but it has serious concerns about whether or not Ottawa can meet its deadline to legalize the drug by Canada Day 2018.

Owner Jeff Mooij of the 420 Clinic said there is great potential in the city for a budding marijuana business.

“The market is going to be massive,” he said. “I don’t think people understand when we say 33 per cent of the adult population [is] using this, it’s all walks of life.”

However, Mooij said Ottawa and the Alberta Government have a tight timeline. It’s up to provinces to decide how weed is distributed and sold, and how much it’s going to cost. Ottawa said users have to be at least 18, but Alberta will decided if the legal age will be older than that.

“We’re all siting on pins and needles now for the NDP to pick up the pace and let out what they’re doing,” Mooij explained. “Because 15 months isn’t a long time for anybody to be prepared. So, the more time they give everyone, the better off all the cities in this province will be.”

Premier Rachel Notley said there are complex issues the province has to work at and she’s concerned about ensuring the safety and health of young Albertans. The premier said she is still working on getting the final version of Ottawa’s legislation.
