Brave Calgary youth honoured at 911 awards

A group of Calgary youngsters has been recognized for their bravery and quick action in an emergency situation.

Eight children and teens were honoured at the 911 Heroes Awards ceremony at Telus Spark on Friday.

One of the recipients, 15-year-old Andrea Lafont, found herself in the back seat with her three-year-old cousin when a stranger stepped into the running vehicle and sped off.

“To be honest I kind of blanked, I kind of just went into shock, I didn’t know what to expect and then when I finally calmed down, all I was thinking about was getting my baby cousin out of the car,” Lafont described.

Her cousin was the one that said something to get the attention of the man who then yelled at them to get out and that’s when Lafonte dialed 911.

Jennifer Bowman was the officer who answered Lafonte’s call.

“After realizing what she’d been through, that she was able to be that calm and give that much information, I mean I can’t even imagine as an adult not wanting to freak out, so the fact that she was able to do that with a three-year-old with her was pretty impressive,” Bowman said.

Bowman added it’s important to empower kids so they know they can make that 911 call to help save someone’s life.
