Travel Feature: Avoid the crowds this camping season

It’s almost here!

Alberta’s unofficial kick off to summer: May long weekend.

For many, it’s time to break out the tent or trailer and settle into your favourite campsite.

If you don’t like sleeping on the rocky ground, travel writer Jody Robbins says consider some of the glamping options available around Alberta.

“Camping can be made so much easier when you make it easier on yourself,” she said. “You can rent an oTENTik or an equipped campsite, and that’s available at many of our national parks, such as Banff National Park.

“Or our provincial parks have comfort camping. These are safari-like tents and yurts that you can register for with Alberta Parks, but you have to be aware all of these equipped glamping go fast and go early. Their registration lines are already open, but many of them are still available mid-week.”

If you want to avoid the crowds, head east.

“There are so many fantastic sites, not just in Drumheller,” Robbins explained. “The badlands encompasses a very wide region, including Brooks.

“Kinbrook Island Provincial Park is on Lake Newell. This is a really lovely, warm lake and [there are] wonderful camping spots there.”

Or take a road trip north of Edmonton to Elk Island National Park, where the buffalo roam.

For the really adventurous, there are backcountry sites next to mountain lakes, but you’ll have to hike in.
