All you want to do this summer is have fun — so why can’t you stop itching and sneezing?
While Calgary got a break from spring allergies, early summer temperatures made hay fever hit hard beginning in early June.
It may be something you’ve dealt with before, but it’s absolutely possible for you to develop an allergy as an adult.
“Even in your 40s, or even in your 50s,” Specialist Dr. Joel Doctor said.
“If somebody were to move here from a different part of Canada or even a different country and suddenly start to become exposed every season to high levels of grass pollen, what may happen over a period of years is they develop an allergy to grass pollen.”
He said no one should suffer with hay fever, because it’s a very treatable condition.
“So often I’ll see patients who suffer year in, year out, and you know, finally after 10 or 15 years, they decide, you know, we really need to get this looked into and treated,” Dr. Doctor said.
Symptoms can usually be treated with an over the counter antihistamine.
“If necessary, there are some really effective prescription medications: nasal sprays, eye drops that can be used in addition to the antihistamine.”
If you have severe symptoms like seasonal asthma, you can look into allergy shots with your family doctor.
