Sugar shack opens at Heritage Park

Something sweet is opening at Heritage Park.

A sugar shack is now standing in the settlement area, educating visitors on Franco-Canadian history and culture.

Diane Boutin, of the French Canadian Association of Alberta said the building mimics one circa 1885-1920.

“A sugar shack is actually where they would produce maple syrup in the springtime in Quebec and Northern Ontario, I believe. They would harvest the sap from the sugar trees — the maple trees, and then they’d boil it down,” she explained.

The new attraction was funded with help from the federal government’s Canada 150 program.
