A flood of calls about burst pipes as extreme cold snap lifts
The calls started flowing in as the temperatures rose Monday.
“From 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., we had 61 calls related to water issues [and] freezing pipes,” said Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke.

This is definitely something the CFD expected because extreme cold can freeze and expand pipes.
“It acts like an ice plug. So, when the ice thaws then you have the burst pipe and flooding issues that we’re dealing with,” said Henke.
When it comes to houses, people should not leave windows open or turn furnaces off when they’re away.
Airdrie RCMP was forced to close its detachment doors Tuesday morning because of a water main break.
In Calgary’s downtown, some office workers who take the Stephen Avenue route went without a cup of joe after Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters experienced a pipe burst and flood.
