Chuckles costume shop closes after 40 years

After more than 40 years in business, a Calgary costume shop is closing their doors for good Saturday.
Co-owner Dave Fletcher said there are a number of recent events that have led to this point.
“We look at what our wonderful Premier has done with all the labour laws and the extra costs coming in, and you can look at the municipal level with the increase in taxes, it just hits you from all angles and it just, none of it is helping,” he said.
The recession, the hike in minimum wage, and construction in front of their store all added fuel to the fire, but Fletcher also blames Amazon.
“There’s just a lot of traffic that used to come to the store that is now hitting the keyboard instead of the brick and mortar stores,” he said. “We’ve seen behaviour even as they come out of the dressing rooms they make comments, ‘oh now we know what to go home and order.'”
Chuckles will be open until 6 p.m. Saturday at their location at 6130 1A Street S.W.
On Sunday volunteers will help pack and send the remaining stock back to suppliers.
