Travel: How to take the stress out of your weekend camping trip

The camping season has arrived! Are you ready to roll?

In Alberta, the RV is king, but if you don’t have one, travel writer Jody Robbins says you can rent someone else’s.

“90 per cent of travel trailers get used only 14 days out of the year,” she said.

“So, if you want to get some of that money back, you can put your trailer up on Wheel Estate, which is an RV sharing service. It’s a good way for people like me, who don’t have a camper, and you can test drive a particular model. It’s just like Airbnb. It’s a peer-to-peer marketplace but except for RV rentals.”

When you get to that perfect campsite, there are a few things to remember, including not leaving empty pop or beer cans laying about, or you could have furry visitors.

“Because the smell will attract wildlife, you ought to rinse them out and put them in your vehicle, or at the recycling bin before bed,” said Robbins.

As for cooking, Jody says campfire pie irons are so versatile.

“You can make so many meals out of it besides sandwiches,” she said.

“You can shred some potatoes and throw in an egg. You can make tacos, pizza, quesadilla.”

Another hack seasoned campers know is to pack frozen food, like chilli or juice boxes in your cooler, so you don’t waste space on the ice.
