West Eau Claire Park reopens in Calgary

After 18 months of construction, West Eau Claire Park has reopened.

The park boasts designated walking and bike paths, stepped terraces and multiple seating areas.

What makes the public space unique is the importance it plays to flood protection.

“What citizens might not realize is how integrated the flood protection is within the area, as it’s a natural part of the design and doesn’t interrupt the riverfront experience,” explained Joyce Tang, program manager with the City of Calgary.

There is a flood wall with a bench, stepped terraces that elevate the park and the Delta Garden, which is a flood barrier with raised planters.

The project cost $10.6 million, and approximately 30 per cent of the cost went to flood mitigation efforts.
