Annual Calgary AIDS Walk and Run raises awareness for HIV

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgarians headed to Eau Claire Plaza on Sunday to raise awareness for HIV at the 30th annual AIDS Walk and Run.

The event provides critical funds for HIV Community Link’s prevention, education, and support programs.

“Over 80,000 living with HIV in Canada and about one in five don’t know they have HIV. So it’s really important for us to continue to get messages out about testing and about access to treatment services and how to prevent transmission of HIV,” said Leslie Hill, executive director of HIV Community Link.

Jennifer Klink has been an advocate since her brother passed away from AIDS-related illness and believes we have to continue raising awareness about the disease.

“People don’t realize that there are certain communities where the HIV rate is actually increasing and I think out there a lot of people think it’s cured already.”

The event is hoping to raise $80,000.
