Council to discuss lowering speed limits

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary City Council will discuss lowering residential speed limits on Monday.
Several councillors along with Mayor Naheed Nenshi are pushing to change speed limits in neighbourhoods from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.
The motion states that the World Health Organization reports that 90 per cent of pedestrians will survive being hit by a vehicle travelling 30 km/h, 60 per cent at 40 km/h and 20 per cent at 50 km/h.
Ward 7 Councillor Druh Farrell said dropping the speed limits would make streets safer for children.
“The World Health Organization has done studies around the word and certainly in Calgary and Canada, were no different, traffic collisions are the number one cause of early injury related deaths of children, so we have a responsibility to act.”
Currently the motion would only apply to residential roads and not collector streets. Council meets at 9:30 a.m.
