4-H youth learn rodeo skills from the best of the best

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Some of the best cowboys and cowgirls around are teaching the rodeo stars of tomorrow down on the stampede grounds this weekend at the 21st annual Calgary Stampede 4-H Rodeo taking place at the Nutrien Western Events Centre.

There’s no shortage of steer riding, goat tying and calf roping going on in the Nutrien Western Events Centre this weekend.

Eighteen-year-old Jared Corriea, who is participating for a third time in the event, says it’s all about learning something new and making a few friends along the way.

“It’s definitely an event to check out if you enjoy the faster aspects of horsemanship and enjoy having a great time and meeting lots of new people.”

Clinician Lorne Lausen says this event is the first thing he marks on his calendar every year.

“It’s a place where the big guys, being the Calgary Stampede, can contribute back to some of the youth and future cowboys, because where are we going to get the cowboys to compete at the Calgary Stampede if we don’t start here,” said Lausen.

As with anything in 4-H, these kids are following the organization’s motto of ‘learn to do by doing’.
