CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Alberta cannabis website has been a major hit on the first day of legalization.
Albertacannabis.org launched just after midnight on Wednesday, with thousands of people flocking online to make their first purchase.
“At the peak, we saw 11,000 people in queue. That’s a huge amount of people to be trying to access the site all at once,” said Chara Goodings with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).
In just the first hour of the site launching, there were more than 10,000 visits and 1,040 orders made.
By 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the number of sales had grown to over 5,000, with 22,569 people registering on the website.
“It’s really great to see such an overwhelming response to the website. We really weren’t sure what to expect, so this totally exceeded our expectations and we’re really happy with that,” said Goodings.
There was lots of traffic at first, but after the initial queue was served there were no problems making an order.
After going through the age verification process, there is a large shop to look through, and then you can choose shipping options between Purolator and Canada Post.
The site also features lots of information about the separate strains — even offering details on terpenes and the flavours present in every strain.
The AGLC wants all Albertans to have equal access to cannabis, and the early indication is the website has been successful on that front.
“That is one of the main priorities, that everyone has an opportunity to have access to clean product and not have to look towards the illicit market,” added Goodings.
If you made a purchase right off the bat, you also will not have to wait long.
“A lot of orders have already been packed and sent to Purolator and Canada Post,” said Goodings. “And people could be receiving their orders as early as tomorrow.”
The high demand does mean several products have sold out, but Goodings says producers will continue adding products to the site and customers should see plenty more options in the near future.
