Fish and Wildlife free moose twice from downed overhead lines

GRANDE PRAIRIE (660 NEWS) – New images have surfaced of Fish and Wildlife officers successfully freeing a moose from some downed overhead lines in northern Alberta.

They were called to the scene Sunday to find the animal tangled along the railway tracks, west of Grande Prairie. The lines were very old, and there was no electricity.

In the animal’s struggle to free itself, the wire wound up around its neck and antlers, even some of it got in its mouth.

Officers decided to tranquillize the animal so they could move in close to free it. After making sure it was okay, they trimmed back the wires.

They returned later that day to find it was stuck in more of the same copper wire; its leg was also stuck in a nearby fence.

Fish and Wildlife successfully freed the animal a second time and made sure it was able to stand and eat, showing no signs of distress before they left.

Crews have since been checking on the area routinely to make sure no other animals have gotten stuck.

They’re also working to figure out who owns the wires in hopes of getting them removed.
