Calgary man who had seizures acquitted in death of two siblings

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A Calgary man charged in the death of a brother and sister has been found not guilty on two counts of criminal negligence causing death.
On Aug. 2, 2017, James Robert Farkas blew through an intersection and crashed into another vehicle while having a seizure killing the siblings.
Ritvik and Ramshi Bale were leaving the Superstore parking lot on 46th Street S.E., when their vehicle was struck by a pick-up truck that had veered off the road.
The crown argued that Farkas was epileptic and unfit to drive, but the judge ruled he had taken the proper steps to mitigate the risk.
Farkas told the court he doesn’t plan to drive again.
“This was very traumatic for him, he has not been able to move past it,” said defence lawyer Curtis Mennie. “He is still seeking counselling for it. It’s not something that he wants to put himself in that situation ever again, he can live his life without driving.”
The parents of the victims plan to continue advocating for stricter rules around driving with a medical condition.
