CALGARY (660 NEWS) – There were sighs of relief from the family of slain bartender Dexter Bain after his killer was returned to prison.
Kyle Ledesma, who had been out on bail pending the results of his retrial, was returned to prison Monday afternoon.
He was convicted for a second time on Sunday by a jury of second-degree murder in the 2010 shooting of Bain.

Bain was working as a bartender at a northeast bar when he was killed. He was shot twice in the back in what the Crown had maintained was a botched robbery.
A retrial was ordered in 2015 after it was determined a trial judge had failed to properly analyze some evidence.
“I’m happy that he’s behind bars, let me just say that,” said Bain’s mother Kim Godin. “I was quite surprised that he wasn’t behind bars yesterday, I just thought that was ludacris but anyway, I feel safe now.”
Godin says this is the third trial that was started in the death of her son and a lot of this has been opening up new wounds.
“We’re dealing with a loss so there’s grief and that’s totally separate from then coming here and looking at autopsy pictures of your only child is difficult and then dealing with my granddaughter and keeping her up to date. We did not have a good holiday season, this was looming,” she said.
She’s already planning to return to the city in three to four years to fight any kind of parole eligibility that’s offered to Ledesma.
“My son was killed, shot in the back twice, he was at work, doing his job. He wasn’t even supposed to be there that evening but he was and he was shot in the back, that alone to me says it, that’s a coward, complete coward,” said Godin.
She would like to see the maximum penalty but is not sure they will get that with the second-degree murder conviction.
The Crown has indicated to the Justice that they will be seeing a parole ineligibility of more than 10 years.
Godin says it’s god that keeps her going along with her faith.
“I know my boy is in heaven and I know that I will see him again so it’s as simple as that, I think I said it yesterday, I just can’t imagine how people go through a crisis in life without having faith.”
A sentencing date has been set for Friday.
