BROOKS (660 NEWS) — A junior-A hockey team in Alberta is on the brink of breaking a historic winning streak this week.
Last weekend, the Brooks Bandits won their 28th straight home game, tying the Red Deer Rustlers record from the 1976-1977 season.
The Bandits, who sit at 53-3, also have the chance to break a record set by themselves back in 2013 when they won 53 games in a season and took the national championship.
“This team has had the same head coach in place, a board of directors that have helped to frame it as one of the top performing organizations in Canada, and a lot of people are starting to feel that all of the hard work over the last few years, is starting to pay off for them this year,” said Bandits business manager Tyler King.
“It’s something that the people of Brooks deserve because they’ve supported this team from day 1 back in 2000 when the team first started and then missed the playoffs for the first four years, there was still great turnout for games in Brooks,” King said. “When you consider the fact the population of Brooks is less than 15,000 people and yet the attendance at our Family Day game was over 1,800, it gives you perspective just how deep the passion for this level of hockey is in Brooks.”
Brooks can break the record with home win number 29 when they take on Camrose this Friday.
