Package-free store set to open in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — This weekend is the grand opening of Canary Goods, one of the first stores of its kind in Calgary. The zero waste market has set up shop in Kensington and is aiming to change the way people buy everyday products like dental floss, toothbrushes, deodorant, and even bandaids.

“The cost of recycling is going to go up, so there is really an economic benefit to thinking about eliminating some of this stuff before it even enters the economy,” Tara Meyer, co-owner of the store, said.

You can bring your own container, or buy on there and then fill it up with different products like dish soap, shampoo, conditioner and cleaning products. Meyer also points out that many of the products are environmentally friendly.

“Think about maybe replacing one thing at a time. For example, beeswax food wraps, compostable bandaids, plastic-free shampoo and conditioner bars,” she said.

In terms of the future, Meyer thinks this will be the way of the future as people become more conscious of the impact of single-use plastics on the environment.

“We’re not anti-plastic because we feel it’s a useful material when used responsibly,” she said.
