CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary city council is bringing back the summer jobs program to help curb the youth unemployment rate.
According to Statistics Canada, Calgary’s youth unemployment rate for 15 to 24 years olds sits just above 10 per-cent.
The program is expected to make its full return in the summer of 2020.
“There probably won’t be much of a program this summer, unfortunately, we’re just a little too late, we’re a little too late in hiring and we don’t have the ability to apply for those grants,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi.
Another reason given is that the city has missed the deadline for subsidies from the province and the federal government.
The city originally cut the summer jobs program to save money in the budget.
