Pipes bursting all over the city

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The problem of bursting pipes is only getting worse in Calgary.

The city says because of the extreme cold, frost has now penetrated to a depth of eight feet, and it’s causing problems for water mains.

Since last Friday, there have been more than 80 calls for service.

That compares to just 10 calls in 2018.

More than 70 homes in the community of Midnapore were left without water since Friday, and the city issued vouchers so people could take showers at a nearby recreation centre.

Mike Black lives in Midnapore and says the past five days have been tough, especially since he has a baby to look after as well.

“I was worried about making formula, sterilizing bottles, doing laundry, of course with the baby it’s a huge amount of laundry,” said Black.

He adds despite the struggles they are still getting by.

“In the mean time we’ve had to take buckets of water from outside, the city has provided a water truck, we are fortunate to have family, we take our laundry to family, we go to the pool to shower – we have been making due, but it’s tough.”

Managers of Drinking Water Distribution and Repair and Distribution will have more to say on Thursday during a news conference.
