Group set to determine next step for Calgary event centre

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Negotiations between the City of Calgary and the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation around a new event centre may start soon.

A committee has appointed a working group that will be tasked with engaging citizens and stakeholders.

This follows council allowing up to $1.5 billion for capital projects, including an event centre.

The subcommittee will answer the many questions council has, including when these negotiations can start, but Ward 6 Councillor Jeff Davison stresses there is no blank check.

“The reality is, what council has done is provided conditional approval,” he explained. “By conditional approval, it means just that: it’s upon the condition of a laundry list of items, including how to finance it.”

Ward 11 Councillor Jeromy Farkas will be in this group and appreciates the chance.

“Not just as the area councillor, but as somebody who has been skeptical of the finances. I think it really speaks well to the process,” Farkas said.

On Monday night, council voted 11-4 to pass plans on a new events centre.
