CALGARY (660 NEWS) — In the past two weeks, a Calgary vet clinic has had two different house cats attacked by bobcats.
Acadia Drive Animal Clinic posted on its Facebook warning pet owners to be careful, especially outside with smaller animals.
One of the incidents happened in the Lake Bonavista area, while the second one happened in Deer Run.
“One of these attacks was actually in the backyard while family members were present. So, you got to be pretty careful at the moment if you’re in an area where people know there are bobcats with little dogs and cats,” said Peter Blomfield, veterinarian, Acadia Drive Animal Clinic. “These encounters can be pretty extreme and severe, and if people think their cat has been bitten or attacked by an animal, they should get them checked out sooner rather than later.”
One of the cats had extensive injuries that required a lot of treatment, but the animal was so severely injured it passed away.
The other cat had a lot of claw marks and punctures in its skin but is expected to make a full recovery.
Blomfield suggests if you live in an area with bobcats you should be speaking with a vet about routine deworming programs and possibly external parasite programs.
