CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It is the biggest trophy in Canadian women’s hockey and now, it’s in Calgary.
Last Sunday, the Calgary Inferno claimed the Clarkson Cup with a 5-2 win over Les Canadiennes de Montreal.
Rightwinger Rebecca Leslie says winning the cup was special, not only for the team but for all girls playing hockey in the city. She hopes the Clarkson Cup and the CWHL will one day be a household name.
“When you’re a little boy or little girl growing up you saw the Stanley Cup and you’re thinking ‘how can I win that, I’d love to play in the NHL one day’. Hopefully, our goal is one day girls can see the Clarkson Cup and say ‘wow, that’s the Clarkson Cup? I want to play in the CWHL and I want to win that cup’.”
Leslie and her teammate Kelly Murray are encouraged by the encouragement they’ve received since the big win.
“There’s been a lot of positive support from Calgarians and across Canada even,” said Murray. “Seeing the NHL posts about us and just different accounts that are so famous and worldwide. To see that they’re respecting us and respecting our championship, it’s great to see,” adds Leslie.
The Inferno will show off the Clarkson Cup before the Calgary Flames game on Wednesday night and Murray joked maybe it could motivate them heading into the NHL playoffs.
“We’ve seen a couple comments on Twitter where they mentioned, ‘the Stamps won, now the girls won, it’s up to the boys now.’.”
The team plans to bring the cup to various places and girls hockey teams in the city and are in talks with possible marching in the Stampede Parade as they did after their last championship in 2016.
