35 years later: A look back at Harvey the Hound

By 660 NEWS Staff

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — He’s the longest-tenured Calgary Flame.

Harvey the Hound, who was first introduced back in 1984, has been with the Flames for some of the most memorable moments in the team’s history.

From getting his tongue ripped out by then-Oilers coach Craig MacTavish to pounding his drum in the ears of fans in every section, Harvey continues to be one of the faces of the franchise.

While he may have not been well received when he first came in as the league’s first mascot, he definitely is now.

Jamie Macoun, a former Flames player, compares Harvey’s star power to that of Flames’ legend Lanny McDonald. When the team and Harvey would visit the children’s hospital, Harvey would steal the spotlight.

“He’s considered a friendly mascot” he has “all the things you’d want out of your mascot,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate to meet Harvey quite a few times, and every time he has done a great job.”

Harvey and the Flames will prepare to take on the Avalanche at the Saddledome tomorrow night.
