Winter returns to Alberta with springtime snowfall

CALGARY – The healthy majority of the southern half of the province is under some kind of snow-related weather warning as winter comes back for a spring fling.
From the Red Deer-Rocky Mountain House area down to Lethbridge, Environment Canada has snowfall, winter storm, and blizzard warnings out. Calgary is under a winter storm warning with up to 20 centimetres of snow expected in some areas.
The weather agency says up to 30 centimetres are possible in the foothills region.
“In the wake of the cold front passing through this evening expect strong northerly winds gusting as high as 90 km/h. These will lead to reduced visibilities in blowing snow and will produce local whiteout conditions,” reads the weather alert.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly-accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”
Meteorologist Andrew Schultz jokes that Albertans keep their snow brushes in their cars all year long and springtime snowstorms actually aren’t that uncommon in the province.
“At the surface, we’ve got some warm air. At higher levels in the atmosphere, some very cold air still exists. So, when you bring that moisture in flakes can fly.”
And while Edmonton isn’t under any weather warnings, the city is still seeing a spring snowfall.
The snow should clear up over the next couple of days with sun and low-but-plus temperatures in the forecast. There is a chance, however, for the snow to return on Thursday.
