Next phase of 17 Avenue SW construction beginning

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Red Mile is going to be clogged up again, but it will be with construction workers and not Flames fans.

The final stage of renovations to 17 Avenue is back on after the Flames were eliminated from the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“Our focus is to get the work done and be off the avenue as soon as possible this year,” explained project manager Peter Rudolf. “Come mid-May, we’ll have two zones closed between 9 Street and 14 Street, and multiple crews working to make sure we meet our 2019 completion.”

Crews have the road closed between 8 and 10A Streets right now with closures also coming next month between 9 and 14 Streets.

There will also be temporary one-ways on surrounding streets and detours in place.

The City of Calgary hopes to minimize the impact on residents and businesses by keeping sidewalks and access points open in the meantime.

At this point, over 65 per cent of the planned work has been completed, including new sidewalks, asphalt and plumbing.
