Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League hits the pitch in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Professional soccer returns to Calgary for the first time in nearly two decades Saturday afternoon.
Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said there might be some nerves during the anthem and opening kick off versus visiting York9.
“As long as we can, you know, get over the first 10-15 minutes of chaos in the opening part of the game I think we’ll settle into our rhythm,” he said. “There is going to be adrenaline pumping through the veins, these guys are like caged animals right, there’s been a hype growing towards it country-wide, even worldwide, now and everybody’s ready to play.”
The gaffer adds having a pitch at Spruce Meadows makes for a very unique experience for both the players and fans.
“They’ve always been big believers in (Canadian athletes) and giving Canadians a wonderful experience,” he said. “When people come down to Spruce Meadows (even if it’s cold) wrap up it’ll be a great event.”
Wearing the captain’s armband for the home team is Lethbridge product Nik Lederwood.
This marks the first professional soccer action in Calgary since the early 2000s.
