Calgary’s massive Lilac Festival may grow
CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Tens of thousands will be flocking to Calgary’s Beltline for the 30th annual Lilac Festival.
The free, day-long event is open to all ages offering up shopping, entertainment and tonnes of food, and that’s why Producer Jennifer Rempel recommends bringing your appetite.
“Food wise you can expect everything from a Venezuelan arepa, to an Indonesian dish with noodles, so there’s something for everyone. There’s vegan, vegetarian, ice cream, even roasted corn and fish tacos,” she says.

Rempel explains the festival first started with a thousand people three decades ago and is now so popular, it typically draws 100,000 each year. Looking toward the future she expects the event will get even bigger.
“That’s kind of a very large conversation that would heavily involve the City of Calgary and their opinions on whether time or space would be better,” she explains. “I wouldn’t see it being two days I would just see the footprint grow larger.”
On the environmental side down the road she also hopes to see more free water re-fill stations. Right now they have one which is offered up by the City of Calgary.
