Heroics recognized by Calgary police at the Chief’s Awards Gala

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It was a night to honour those from the Calgary Police Service who stood up when the time was called.

The 2019 Chief’s Awards Gala was held Thursday night.

Among some of the most prestigious honours of the evening was the Award of Exceptional Recognition for Life-Saving which went to Alex Harris, a member of the DOAP team and his partner Transit Peace Officer Kitty Aalders.

On November 8, 2018, Harris and Aalders encountered a dangerous situation in which an elderly woman was pushed off the train platform and on to the tracks.

While attending to the woman, Harris stabilized her, recognizing the potential of a serious spinal injury until EMS responded.

Harris’ extended his gratitude ahead of the ceremony.

“No words to describe it, it’s humbling. I’ve never really been a part of something like this, so it’s definitely something that’s kind of hard to take in at first but I’m really excited to be here.”

For Aalders, this is just a part of the job and prestige comes next.

“This is not why I do it, it’s nice to be recognized of course, but it’s mixed. It’s sad that it happened, I’m just happy we were at the right time at the right place.”

Aalders and Harris continue to be a proud member of the service and DOAP Team.
