Alberta government responds to review of chuckwagon races

EDMONTON – The Government of Alberta plans to steer clear of a Calgary Stampede review into chuckwagon safety.
Earlier this week, the Stampede vowed to revisit the issue following the death of six horses in this year’s Rangeland Derby.

In a statement to 660 NEWS, Alberta Agriculture said, “The Alberta government remains committed to the protection of animals. We will continue to work with agencies or organizations empowered to address incidents such as these. The government is confident the 2019 events will be assessed by the Calgary Stampede and Canadian Chuckwagon Association to address how best to implement measures for improvement in safety and animal care.”
A spokesman for Agriculture Minister Devin Dreeshan said he is not available to comment on the matter.
The Calgary Stampede faces increased pressure to protect livestock and there are even calls to end the chuckwagon races.
