Lightning strikes home in Douglasdale

By 660 NEWS Staff

Lightning has struck a home in the city’s southeast, causing a house fire.

The home, on Douglas Woods Terrace, was struck by lightning around 5 p.m. Tuesday when a storm rolled through the area.

“There’s a variety of emergency vehicles, there’s lots of them,” Jane, who witnessed the fire, told 660 NEWS.

“It looks like the southside of the house was hit,” she added.

Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Paul Frederick says seven people were in the home at the time and they all evacuated safely.

“Crews did an aggressive interior attack to knock down the fire, as well as used an aerial apparatus to attack it from the exterior.”

Emergency crews have blocked roads off while they continue to mop-up the blaze.

A fire investigator is now on scene.

The lightning strike was part of a severe thunderstorm that rolled through the south end of the city.
