Province holds town hall on Supervised Consumption Sites in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The province held a public engagement session Wednesday evening at the BMO Centre as part of its review into safe consumption sites.

The review, which includes stops in five communities across the province, is looking into the social and economic impacts of current sites.

There was a mix of feelings from the people 660 NEWS talked to attending the meeting.

One man says he supports having supervised consumption sites.

“I am in favour of them, Calgary’s got one and they’ve been debating whether they should have another one for the last year, but Vancouver has 35,” he said.

He adds that instead of dispersing the problems throughout the communities in the city they have concentrated all of them in one area of Calgary.

Rod Knecht, who is the Chair of the committee, says they have received so much feedback during the town halls that they may have to extend their timeline to present the province its findings.

“Our timeline initially was September for the townhalls, October look at the response online, etc, November write up a report, December get it to government,” Knecht said.

“I don’t know, we’re are getting a lot of information and it’s all valuable information. Actually, it will lead to better decision making the more feedback we get from Albertans.”

The committee has already held sessions in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, and Red Deer, with two more planned for Grande Prairie and Edmonton after Calgary.
