Up to 15 cms of snow expected in Calgary before Monday

CALGARY – As every good Calgarian knows the weather in this region loves to fluctuate between extremes–and the seemingly-short-lived beginning to fall has proven to be no exception.

Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for Calgary calling for as much as 15 centimetres of snow to fall before Monday morning. Surrounding areas are blanketed by similar warnings.

“There’s a system that is moving in from Idaho and Montana and that will continue to push snow northwards,” explained Environment Canada meteorologist Marianna Greenhough.

Overnight into Sunday morning around four centimetres is expected to fall, with the bulk of the snow coming during the day Sunday and into the following morning. Greenhough says by the end of Monday we could see even closer to 25 centimetres of snow.

Snow could at times be wet and heavy, according to the weather agency’s alert, and it could cause issues on the roads.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate,” reads the notice.

The City of Calgary assured people earlier in the week that they were out prepping the roads for when the snow hits–and they’ll be out and about clearing the snow as it falls.

“We’ve got enough staff in place to be able to handle this storm effectively,” Jim Fraser, a District Manager for Calgary Roads, said in an interview Thursday.

“You know if we get a large amount of snowfall and you don’t have to be on the roads, stay off the roads,” suggested Fraser.

“And stay back from the operators that are operating the pieces of equipment so that you give them enough room in terms of safety.”

Don’t put away your fall attire just yet–Greenhough says the snow should leave us as quickly as it came.

“There should be a rebound in temperature mid-week,” said Greenhough. “It will take a little bit of time for us to get that warming [front] to move back in but we should those plus temperatures later, midweek.”

And that’s when we’ll see the snow begin to melt and disappear.

“It should be just a brief brush with winter.”
