Calgary haunted house back from the dead

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A haunted house on Calgary’s north end will be scaring kids on Halloween after all.

Panamount Panic, set up in Panorama Hills for the past few years, was ordered to shut down after drivers complained the attraction caused blind spots.

Homeowner Ron Motteram told 660 NEWS he’s been given the green light from the City of Calgary to open up this month after changes are made.

“We now have to cut the corner of the haunted house on the one side to improve the view of the road. We have to take the wooden roof off because that makes it a permanent structure which is not allowed. We can cover it with a tarp though. We do have to spray a pyro guard inside all the walls and decorations.”

Motteram hopes the city will change its permit process so headaches like this can be avoided in the future. He’s hoping to get together with other homeowners and city officials to iron out the problems and create an appropriate permit.

“There’s a gap here, we have to follow building codes. I would actually have to follow codes to putting an addition on the house. They actually called this an illegal suite. That’s the problem, there’s nothing in between to approve these types of things.”

The initial announcement about the closure of Panamount Panic was greeted with disgust by many. One neighbour even set up a petition asking the city to reverse its decision.

Motteram said they have had a tremendous amount of support from the community with offers from businesses to help.

He and his son Quinn first started the annual project a few years ago with help from the rest of the family and some friends. He said his dad was enormously proud of the family’s endeavour. They are hoping to gather donations for the Calgary Food Bank in his memory after he passed away last year. Motteram says his dad used to volunteer there every week.

Panamount Panic will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (October 25-27) and Halloween night. Motteram says they’ll open from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for the younger kids and then from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. (and maybe a little later) for everyone who likes a good scare!

The haunted house is located at 131 Panamount St. N.W.
