Transit committee looks for more engagement on lower speed limits

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – No decisions on lowering residential speed limits were made during a City Committee meeting Wednesday.

Instead, members of the Transportation and Transit Committee agreed to further engagement with Calgarians and business stakeholders on the issue.

In Sept. 2018, City Council voted to look at the possibility of lowering the speed limits after a motion was brought forward by Councillor Druh Farrell.

“The World Health Organization has done studies around the world and certainly in Calgary and Canada, we’re no different. Traffic collisions are the number one cause of early injury-related deaths of children, so we have a responsibility to act,” said Farrell.

Airdrie has had 30 km/hr speed limits since the 1980s and Mayor Peter Brown said it has worked for his community.

“We rarely receive calls anymore about speed, I mean, the vast majority of people whether it’s a posted speed limit on a freeway or any other road. They do a little bit over the speed limit. So, you know 30 is 35 or 36.”

The results of the engagement and a recommendation will be brought back to the committee no later than June 2020.
