Calgary police urging people to keep checkstop locations under wraps

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Motorists who drive drunk or high could be using their smartphones to avoid detection and that’s an issue for the Calgary Police Service.
Google Maps is adding the ability to report slowdowns, speed traps, and potentially checkstops.
Sgt. Joerg Gottschling doesn’t have a problem if users report speed traps, because it encourages drivers to slow down.
“The fixed sites are just that, they are fixed and they’re always there, so it’s really quite easy for a program like Google to upload where those locations are and we, in fact, advertise where those locations are and you can get those locations off the city website,” he said.
However, Gottschling says reporting the location of checkstops could allow impaired drivers to avoid being caught.
“If someone slows down and doesn’t speed past the location we the police are in favour of that, but if someone purposely drives around the block who is currently drunk and continues driving we do have a concern there,” he said.
