Fish and Wildlife looking for poachers after 2 eagles shot in province

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Two bald eagles have been found shot dead in the province and Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers are searching for who’s responsible.

According to the department, the first eagle was found at a Wetaskiwin Genesee pheasant release site on Oct. 20.

A second eagle was found dead nine days later in Fort McMurrary. Wildlife officers say the young bird was previously seen feeding on a carcass on a local road and was later found shot and “left wasted” nearby.

Fish and Wildlife thinks the second eagle may have been shot from someone in a car or from someone on the road.

So far the investigators don’t think that the two deaths are related, but they are looking for more information.

Anyone with details on either of these killings can submit a report online or call the Report A Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3800.

Eagles are protected in Alberta and there is no hunting season for them. Hunting eagles can result in a $100,000 fine and/or two years in jail.
