Budget cuts may lead to a new look for New Year’s Eve celebrations

CALGARY (CityNews) – For years, Olympic Plaza has hosted Calgary’s huge New Year’s Eve bash but tough economic times may have finally caught up to the party.
During budget deliberations last month, city staff explained they will be less involved in the party this year.
“We are still going to be having new year’s eve festivities,” said one city planner. “There will just be a different portfolio of activities and we will be more reliant on some of our partners to provide some of the animation and some of the programming tied to those activities.”
CityNews has reached out to the City of Calgary to find out what could be affected. The city has yet to respond.
When asked about the possibility of a scaled-down event, many Calgarians had mixed-reaction.
“Times are tough, if they’re cutting back a little bit, that’s fine,” said one man. “Given the economic times, scaling back is probably a good thing.”
“I think people need a reason to celebrate. In my two cents I think it might be worth it to not cut back on that one,” said another man.
Regardless of how big or small the festivities will be, those we spoke to still plan to attend.
